Criticisms

Despite BHP Billiton's sustainability initiatives, the company attracted criticism on several fronts. Some critics argued that its environmental initiatives were nothing but PR exercises. According to Prof. Sharon Beder (Beder), BHP Billiton used PR strategies to protect its image rather than improve its operational practices.

The company faced its greatest environmental criticism for its Ok Tedi mine in PNG, which reportedly polluted the local rivers. In 2000, the World Bank had asked BHP to close the mine. According to the report, "significant and unacceptable environmental impact is occurring in the Ok Tedi and Fly Rivers below the mine."...
